Aligning the healthcare ecosystem for a successful 12-digit NDC transition
The National Drug Code is changing. The healthcare ecosystem needs to prepare together.
FDA’s transition to a standardized 12-digit National Drug Code will require coordinated changes across healthcare systems and settings, transactions, data, operations, and workflows before 2033.
The NDC Coordination and Implementation Forum brings together government, industry, standards organizations, and technology partners to coordinate the planning, dependencies, testing, and implementation required for the transition.
A System-Wide Transition
The NDC is used throughout healthcare, from manufacturing, packaging, and distribution to prescribing, dispensing, reimbursement, public health, and regulatory systems.
Moving to the 12-digit NDC will require changes across thousands of organizations and interconnected systems, many of which will need to continue supporting existing NDC representations during the transition.
No organization can prepare entirely on its own. Decisions about standards, technology, data, timelines, and testing in one part of the ecosystem can create significant dependencies elsewhere.
What the Forum Does
The NDC Forum provides a common structure for organizations working on different parts of the transition to share information, identify dependencies, coordinate implementation, and address issues that cross organizational and sector boundaries.
